Anastasia Beverly Hills, Burt’s Bees, e.l.f.
Today I want to introduce you to a topic which I’ve never talked about on my blog before, which is cruelty-free cosmetics. I’m a vegetarian since 4,5 years now and since then I’m interested in all kinds of topics about animals. For whatever reason I’ve never really reflect a lot about animal testing in the cosmetic industry. I think that a lot of people don’t want to deal with this subject or simply are too lazy to deal with it and never really thought about it. How did I get to this subject? I’ve been in america and I was searching for a new foundation cause mine was almost empty. I’ve bought the L’Oreal True Match even though I’ve read in the internet and especially on Facebook in the comment section that L’Oreal is testing on animals. Sometimes you just don’t remember things like that when you’re buying stuff but now I really wan to change it.
I felt bad after I bought this product especially after I did some more research. I’ve found two lists from PETA, which show companies that do test on animals and companies that don’t test on animals. When I first skim trough the list of companies that do test on animals I was shocked. Companies like Avon, Benefit, Bobbi Brown, Clinique, Dove, Garnier, MAC Cosmetics, Maybelline, Neutrogena, Revlon, Schwarzkopf, Vichy und Victoria’s Secret do test on animals. I was outraged about the amount of known brands and about the fact that I own a lot of products from these brands. Then again I’m happy that there are brands like e.g. Anastasia Beverly Hills, Burt’s Bees, e.l.f. Cosmetics, Lime Crime Cosmetics, LUSH Cosmetics, NYX Cosmetics, The Body Shop, Urban Decay and much more that don’t test on animals. On the PETA website there is an other cool feature wich is a search tool where you can just type in any company name and it will show you if they do or don’t test on animals, if this brand is vegan and so on. Furthermore I found a list from the german PETA website that shows which companies don’t test on animals, whose products are available in Germany.
There are a lot companies that don’t test on animals which I didn’t even know until now. If someone really wants to change his or her buying behavior and stop supporting companies that test on animals it’s not that hard to do so. Of course you found your favorite products that you are using since a couple of years now but I’d rather buy a new unknown product with a good conscience than keep letting animals suffer for me. You can start slowly and in my opinion you should not throw every animal tested product away now but from now on you can start buying products that are cruelty-free. Sometimes it’s hard, cause not every company makes it visible but I’d rather buy a product from which I definitely know that it’s 100% cruelty-free than buying something where I’m unsure. Furthermore you can find some symbols that a product is cruelty-free like e.g. at Anastasia Beverly Hills, LUSH and NYX packaging.
I wish there would be more bloggers and YouTubers out there who deal with this topic. I don’t think that anyone would ever do something like this to his pet or would like to see something with their own eyes but there aren’t enough people who are thinking about animal testing. Currently there is only the trend to eat vegan but what about all the cosmetic products? I really hope that there will be a change soon and that especially famous bloggers and YouTubers start talking about such important topics like this one cause these people are idols for young girls (and boys). Luckily there are some bloggers who already deal with topics like this. Last summer I met Olja at the Budni blogger event and she’s blogging about cruelty-free cosmetics on her blog Innocent Beauty – take a look at her blog, it’s definitely worth it! Furthermore I’ve found the app Bunny Free trough PETA which is available for iPhone and Android. There you can directly search for companies on your phone, see whole lists or search for special criteria like vegan cosmetic and so on. I think this is a great idea for on the go!
Did you ever deal with this topic before? And do you take care of buying cruely-free cosmestics?
